Christian Latin The earliest Christians outside of Palestine primarily used Greek in their preaching and worship and writing. It was not until the end of the second century that a Christian Latin literature begins to emerge with the writings of the African theologian Tertullian. As Christianity began to express itself in Latin, it was inevitable that new words—‘Christianisms’—and new meanings for old words would appear, and thus a Christian Latin vocabulary began to develop.
